Episode 02: Karma and the “Natural Science” of Cause & Effect

Karma… you’ve probably heard that term used thousands of times and have likely used it just as much yourself, as a term to describe some sort of revenge or retribution from the universe, being dished out to someone who’s done something unethical or perhaps hurtful to you in some way. When you hear of a rival or an enemy receiving payback for their wrongdoing, you might consider that it’s karma, just doing its job. While on some level, that certainly is karma, the real meaning of the term goes much deeper and it doesn’t only affect us individually, nor is it always a negative thing. The law of karma affects the entire planet as a whole and the law that determines the nature of the karma we create is cause & effect.

The lyrics to Rush’s epic song “Natural Science” from their 1980 album “Permanent Waves” provide a perfect blueprint to explain these two concepts and it’s no stretch to say that Rush’s drummer, the late Neil Peart was certainly a modern day Aristotle, when it came to expressing deep, philosophical lessons, within the context of a song. Using the allegory of the “natural science” of our own planet (as well as inter-galactic space), Peart compares our human world with the macrocosm of the entire universe, beginning with the smallest microorganisms and their connection and role they play in the ongoing drama that is human life.

In this episode, I take a deep dive into the definition of karma, as well as the universal of law of cause & effect, to illustrate how the choices we make from moment to moment can profoundly influence the direction of our lives and subsequently, the trajectory of humanity. Will mankind continue and evolve, over the course of the next millennium, or will we follow in the footsteps of the dinosaurs and eventually become fossils for the next intelligent species to piece together? Can humans learn to peacefully coexist, or will we be responsible for our own demise? The answer to those questions are entirely up to each and every one of us and the actions we take, moment to moment.

After listening to this episode, I hope you’ll have a clearer understanding of how we humans are collectively in control of our own destiny and if we learn to respect our individual karma, (as well as that of others) and abide by the law of cause & effect, it’s still possible for us to turn things around from the direction we seem to be headed and point us toward a brighter future, devoid of conflict and war. Come with me as I explore the inner workings of the quantum world and its connection to the farthest corners of the universe and how each one of us plays a role in this cosmic drama.
